Important Notes 1: I will bring to your awareness things that are important. Emphasis is on Practical, & Useful. You will be given feedback enabling you to keep track of your grade. Please set phones to silent. I expect your full attention when I am lecturing. Show veterans respect and do not make loud noises around them, insult them or harass them. These persons have put their lives on the line for years for you. Many have had to kill or seen others die. Treat them as you would want to be treated yourself.

HOW TO GET A GOOD GRADE: LISTEN, MAKE NOTES, STUDY MY NOTES, REVIEW OFTEN

LEARN EVERYTHING in these NOTES as it will be on unannounced tests more than once.

Set time aside daily for study. This is a college level class. You are expected to spend at least 1 hour in preparation for each hour in class. If you do that you will get an A or B in this class, 4 nice college credits, and a nice reference if you ever need it but if you don't you will get an E.

Learn how to learn. Find what works for you. Learn how to take quick notes. When time is short use abbreviations for subject words. Example if lecture is on computers make a note c=computer then every time the professor says the word computer you can just write down a c. Leave out vowels when time is short. Later rewrite the notes while the lecture is still fresh in your head. To help you to learn and think do the following:

Learn to Ask the 6 learning Questions What, Who, Where, When, How and Why.

Always treat others as you would want to be treated yourself. This is the best way to get along with people. This is the best rule of human relations. (AKA Golden Rule) also Bring no harm to another by your actions or your inaction. You are responsible for treating the equipment and fellow students with respect and care. Treat the equipment as if it were yours because it is. You paid for it. No open containers of liquids.

Make a backup copy of all important work and notes on your flash drives. That is reason for 2 of them. A good copy is best insurance. Please shut off computer and monitor before you leave (required). Clean up any mess. If the room lights blink immediately note where your belongings are. The room may go black. Be prepared to leave if the lights stay out for over a minute. Fire: go out nearest safe exit. There are free tutors available for PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Access in the open Lab. If terrorist around, stay out of sight.

You can buy both of books used for as little as $10-25 each if you shop around. But the college requires you use the myitlab program. By the way you can get Win 7 for under $30 as a student. If you do not own MS Office, DO NOT BUY MS Office FOR THIS CLASS. Bring pen, paper, two USB flash drives, set of ear sound buds and your full attention to every class. Yellow ribbon handy to avoid loss. Put phone number on flash drive. Do not over rely on computers. Have a plan B if computer fails such as records on paper or CD or flash drive. Flash drives fail. Cloud storage is not always available.

Academic discussion is an important part of the college experience. Our graduates are to learn how to think competently, identify problems, approach them systematically, explore viable solutions evaluate reasoning , arguments, evidence and communicate competently. We will have just a few minutes of academic discussion at the start of each class in which you may raise any issues of importance. Your personal security depends not only on computer knowledge but on knowledge of what is happening in the world around you including understanding of multicultural factors and societal significance. See inside cover of class schedule for more of Macomb's Common Degree Outcomes. So pay attention and learn for your future success. Know about relationships

Know how to make a setting to enforce referential integrity

How to set a primary key

How to delete columns

How to sort in querys

How to use criteria

How to use filter by selection

How to use the show boxes

How to do math in Access

Do the Access review project.

Create a table of customers with the following fields CUSTNUM, FIRSTNAME, STATE, OLDBILL, NEWBILL.

Put in data for 10 customers, with short two letter names, 3 from NY, 3 from VT and 3 from AK. Put numbers greater than 9 and less than 100 into the OLDBILL and NEWBILL fields.

Make the ST field only two characters wide.

Name the table using the naming style taught in class.

Write on it how to set the primary key.

Print the full table. Hand write “1” on this sheet.

Sort the table by FIRSTNAME. (do not print it yet)

Filter the table so that only customers living in VT are seen.

Print this table. Hand write the words "2" on the top of this sheet.

Create a query that shows only fields FIRSTNAME, OLDBILL, NEWBILL.

Add an expression that adds the amount of the OLDBILL to the amount of the NEWBILL.

Name the expression "Balance" so it shows at the top of that column.

Print the results of this query. Hand write "3" on this printed sheet.

Create a form showing all fields from your query.

Modify the form to Put your name in 16 point BOLD and in RED ink at the top.

Print only one customers form. Hand write "4"on this single sheet. Do not print or turn in any extra sheets.

Make a report based on your query.

Put a label at the top of the report containing your name in 16 point bold with Green ink.

Print the report. Hand write “5" on this sheet and turn in only the first page.

If there is more than one page do not turn it in.

Add four more customers from OH and add a Comp Name field.

Fill in short company names in all.

Modify your first query to show just 4 fields: FirstName, CompName, ST, Balance (showing total of LASTBILL and NEWBILL)

Set the query to sort by states.

Print it. Hand write on it “6".

Modify the query criteria so that it will show only the 6 highest balances, with FirstName, CompName, ST.

Print that. Write on it how you did that and hand write “7” on the sheet.

Make a report based on that query of highest balances with your name on top in Blue 16 point, Bold, Italic type. Hand write “8” on that sheet.
